Johnny Chan Biography

Johnny Chan, born in the city of Canton, China in 1957 and is referred to as the "Orient Express" by Bob Stupak, who is an owner of a Las Vegas casino. He is associated with the World Series of Poker. He and his family moved several times during his growing up. Chan's family relocated to Hong Kong in 1962. They decided in 1968 to move to the United States and decided on living Phoenix, Arizona. After another five years, they decided a change would be good and moved to Houston, Texas. This is where they opened a restaurant.

He possesses ten tying record bracelets and he has won main events in the years of 1987 through 1988. This has only happened one additional time. He placed second in the 1989 main event. Chan, who having over twenty-eight WSOP money completes, earned more than $3.7 million alone with the WSOP all the way through his memorable career.

The poker domination is not restricted to poker's events that are more prestigious. While living in the city of Las Vegas has won more currently the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament during the 2005 summer. He came in second place at the 1st installment in the event of the Poker Superstars in the earlier part of the year. He does not play in many of tournaments now days.

As an alternative, he has a preference to fritter the greater part of his playing time in Bellagio's "Big Game," which is the highest limited cash game recorded in the world. In 2002, Chan received poker's greatest honor becoming the first ever, Asian poker player that was inducted in the Poker's Hall of Fame. He gives credit to some of the earlier successes to his Oriental heritage. He said when he began many of the Americans had not played against an Asian player before in a tournament.

Chan is significantly featured in the "Rounder' the 1998 flick there is a videotaping of the 1988 WSOP foremost match which he made with Erik Seidel. Chan also appeared as himself in the flick. Chan tributes the movie as not only making Chan further of a household icon, but also in helping poker in general. Another thing, which Chan is so notoriously known for, is the orange that he always brings to the table. It is not a trinket of luck by any means. He first began bringing the orange to the poker table so the pleasant smell could counteract the smell of cigarette smoke. Although now smoking is not allowed in the casinos, the orange can be found on the table beside Chan. It is used today to keep his mind clear.

When he is not playing poker, he is the owner of a fast-food chain store in the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas. He also works as an advisor for the casinos. Today he is married and has six children. He drives a car with the license plate number "JJ333", which is a hand that has brought him money over the years.
